Refuge
At 1,975 meters, on the ridge that separates the Cavargna Valley From Switzerland, the Garzirola Refuge presides over one of the most open stretches of the border. The building was built in the early 20th century as a barracks for the Guardia di Finanza (Financial Police), at a time when these paths were used at night by those transporting goods from one side of the line to the other. After years of closure, the Capra family reopened it in 2026, renovating it with their own labor and the help of local volunteers.
Mountain dishes prepared on site: pizzoccheri, polenta uncia, polenta and braised meat, and platters of cured meats and cheeses. The menu also features spetzli, which convey the proximity to the other side better than any border sign. There's a children's dish, and for those just stopping by, sandwiches and coffee. The bar is open daily during the season.
Twenty-five beds are available in rooms and dormitories for four to six people. Two options are available: bed and breakfast, or half board with dinner and breakfast, both by reservation. Hot showers and Wi-Fi are provided, which are not a given at this altitude. The room is heated by a wood-burning stove and fireplace. Those who stay overnight can watch the dawn rise from the ridges, while the valley floor is still shrouded in fog.
The shelter has a 24-hour emergency room. It is intended exclusively for life-threatening situations and is not a place to stay overnight. Those wishing to stay at the shelter must book during opening hours.
The starting point is Buggiolo, a hamlet of the Municipality of Rezzo Valley, in the Dasio area.
Standing. Climb to the little church of Madonna del Cep and continue to Passo San Lucio, at 1,541 meters. From there to the refuge, there are two options: the dirt road that passes through Alpe Tabano, which is longer but less steep, or the border ridge, which is more direct and challenging. The entire route to the summit of Monte Garzirola, 1.5 km beyond the refuge, is classified as Expert Hiking: 7.6 km and 1,000 meters of elevation gain. By car. Accessible only by 4x4. From the same location, follow the forest road to Passo San Lucio and continue to Alpe Tabano to the refuge. Not accessible by ordinary vehicles.
Recommended period: June to October. In winter, the route requires mountaineering gear.
Opening times are tentative from May to November, depending on weather conditions and trail conditions. During the rest of the year, openings are possible by reservation on weekends. It's always a good idea to contact the operators before visiting.
