Sixty years of painting between Valsolda, Lugano, and Europe: the Casa Pagani Museum celebrates one of the most recognizable figures of the cross-border art scene.<\/em><\/p>\n

From the May 9 to June 28, 2026<\/strong>, The Pagani House Museum<\/strong><\/a> Castello Valsolda hosts the great retrospective dedicated to Julian Togni<\/strong>, a Valsolda painter of national and international renown. The exhibition spans nearly sixty years of his career, from the spray acrylics of his early work to the celebrated extroverted canvases of his later decades. It is the result of a collaboration between the Casa Pagani Museum, the Friends of the Museum Association, the Compagnia del Castello, the Antonio Fogazzaro Library, and the Municipality of Valsolda.<\/p>\n

The inauguration on May 9th<\/h2>\n

The opening day opens Saturday, May 9th at 5:00 PM<\/strong> in the Church of San Martino di Castello<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 the small \u201cSistine Chapel\u201d of Lombardy, frescoed by Paolo Pagani in 1697 \u2014 with greetings from the authorities and speeches from the mayor Laura Roman\u00f2<\/strong>, of the president of the Friends of the Museum Association Roger Pianezzi<\/strong> and the director Giorgio Mollisi<\/strong>, art historian. The artist himself will take the floor, projecting some slides of his works to illustrate his painting technique, while his relative Gloria Togni<\/strong> will accompany the ceremony with interludes on the transverse flute. 18:00<\/strong> we move to the Pagani House Museum<\/strong> for the ribbon cutting and refreshments in the oratory.<\/p>\n

A route between Valsolda and Canton Ticino<\/h2>\n

Born in Milan in 1942 and raised in Valsolda<\/strong>, Togni trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris<\/strong> (1963-65) and of Rome<\/strong> (1966). He taught for years at CSIA of Lugano<\/strong> and for a decade he presided over the Ticino section of the Society of Swiss Painters and Architects (today Visarte<\/em>), organizing about fifty exhibitions. Today he lives and works in Origlio<\/strong>, in the Lugano district. His biographical trajectory effectively makes him a pivotal figure between the shores of Lake Ceresio.<\/p>\n

Research: painting that emerges from the frame<\/h2>\n

Togni's most recognizable feature is the everted canvas<\/strong> set on a lacquered wooden panel \u2014 the shaped canvas<\/em>, a lexicon that dialogues with Burri, Geiger, Stella, Kelly, Tuttle. But in his work the projection is never a pure geometric shape: it is dense fragment of memory<\/strong>, where classicism is not a citation but a founding law. Togni donated to the Casa Pagani Museum Castle<\/em>, an everted canvas representing his country of origin: an 80x80 cm work on lacquered panel, which becomes a permanent part of the collection of Valsolda artists on the third floor.<\/p>\n
